Shawnee Mission VFW
No One Does More For Vets

Shawnee Mission Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10552 (501c 3 19) has called Shawnee, KS home for over 25 years. Our post is comprised of veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom and the Global War on Terror. This mission of our post is many-fold:

• To preserve and strengthen fellowship among our members
• To assist worthy veterans or family members of veterans
• To perpetuate the memory and history of veterans that have fallen and to assist their widows and orphans
• To foster true patriotism
• To maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom
• To preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies

We achieve this mission by being available to provide information to members and veterans that are transitioning out of military service. Through educational programs we support local veterans with finance help and scholarship opportunities. We hold monthly meetings at our local community center to manage our yearly activities and provide fellowship, information, and hiring opportunities for our members and area veterans.

We also contribute to our local community throughout the year with post activities.

• Buddy Poppy Fundraisers (Memorial Day and Veterans Day): allow us to give annually to two Kansas City area VA hospitals, the VFW National Home, and Shawnee Community Services Fund. These fundraisers also allow us to raise funds to assist veterans in need. We recently donated to local veterans in Chicago, Kansas City and to flood victims in Colorado.
• Voice of Democracy, Patriots Pen, Teacher of the Year, Firefighter of the Year and Policeman of the Year: annual education awards and community support programs that we manage to foster patriotism and sense of community with area students, teachers, firefighters and police.
• Shawnee Days Parade: annual participants
• Flags for Freedom: oversee the City of Shawnee program that places flags along Johnson Drive and Nieman Road for Fourth of July celebration.
• Veterans Day Ceremony: assist in planning and completion of City of Shawnee ceremony that recognized local veterans past and present. Local patriotic program awards are given out at this ceremony.
• Tony Lang 1000 Pair of Shoes Drive: collect and deliver clothing and shoes to local Disabled American Veterans charity.
